It’s not difficult to imagine a basketful of orchids for Easter this year, with the Maui Orchid Society presenting the 2016 Easter Show at the Maui mall March 24, 25, and 26, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  With Spring just blooming, on display will be a fascinating array of orchids grown by some of Maui’s premier hobbyists and professionals, with many of the orchids offered for sale by our local commercial growers.

Maui Orchid Society members Elizabeth Anderson and Dan Gertzenberger are show co-chairs.  “Prices of the plants for sale usually range from $7 to $25,” Anderson said, adding, “It is an exceptional opportunity to buy an Easter gift for a loved one.”  American Orchid Society certified judges will judge the exhibit at the Maui Mall, and ribbons will be awarded.

Celebrating its 75th year, the Maui Orchid Society, a Hawaii non-profit, is all about sharing and raising awareness; and members will be on-hand during the three day exhibit to answer questions regarding the growth and care of orchids. “Growing orchids on Maui is within the reach of all,” former President Bert Akitake said.   During this landmark year, other shows have been scheduled, including: Mother’s Day Show, May 5 through 7; and Orchidland at the Maui Fair, October 6 through 9.

The Maui Orchid Society meets monthly on the third Tuesday at the Wailuku Community Center commencing at 6:30 p.m. The next meeting will be held on April 19.  “These shows and the monthly meetings enable MOS members and the public to learn more about the unique opportunity to raise orchids on Maui,” Jan Porter, 2016 MOS President, advised.
